Beginner Saxophone Quickstart 4 Your Second Octave on Alto Sax
Just returning to these after a year away. Please forgive the very stupid question ….ovtavator exercises… do these without using the octave key itself right?
I do like your playing but this vid is a bit boring, sorry
Great for practicing finger work, dynamics, and articulation. You can exercise your embouchure, but no perfect it. Responsiveness is also very good. Occasionally squeaks a high pitch/screech. You can connect to your mobile phone and hear your phone music through the TS2 headset which is great for practicing silently. The main concern is that the bluetooth connection requires Location permission. This may be a privacy issue since other bluetooth apps don't require Location permission. The other problem is that you cannot pair while in airplane mode while earbuds, watches, and other BT devices can. When flying, you must pair TS2 to your phone before you activate airplane mode. Alternatively, you can use one ear to listen to one of the earpieces connect to the TS2 and your other ear to use one of your bluetooth earbuds. You will not be able to change any settings (eg alto to tenor) without being connected to your phone app. I have reached out to Odisei several times with no explanation other than you need Location permission.
Sick
Very helpful, thanks very much!

Thank you so much you have no idea how thankful I am for this video
Yam 82z is a fantastic horn. My main axe for 20 years now and wouldn’t play anything else!
To quick for me to follow.
Jr walker and the all stars….
This is really useful I just have to say thank you
Kenny G 🎉 need I say more? Everything he plays is great.
Why no double arm for low notes like other Taiwanese pro sax?
bass clarinet + sax = this.
I think you might use #1 a little more often, but #2 adds variety.
Waltz no.2 just sparked in me like i never heard something so beutiful before❤ inspired me to start playing
This video was so helpful for my first steps on the saxophone, can't thank you enough

Anyone done a transcription of the solo at the end?
If you have the classical type embouchure, the smaller tip openings definitely will fit your embouchure more easily. The smaller sizes usually have shorter facing lengths which match up better with the classical type embouchure. If you have a lip out type embouchure or partial lip out type embouchure, you will usually find more expression on a slightly larger tip size mouthpiece. The larger size mouthpieces usually have longer facing lengths which match up better with lip out type embouchures. If you try different sizes of the same mouthpiece, remember to use a softer reed for the larger size mouthpiece or a harder reed for the smaller size mouthpiece. The type of mouthpiece can also determine which tip opening is better. I usually prefer smaller tip openings on mellow mouthpieces and larger tip openings on brighter sounding mouthpieces.
Is this an actual song? If yes, what's it's name?
Great Podcast. Really interesting discussion and loved hearing Nigel play the Jean Paul saxophones.
I don't know how you can play either one of those synthetic reeds, I will be sticking with cane.
Amazing lesson.
I prefer tongue rolling technique
WHERE CAN I FIND BCKINTRACK??
What key can we play thua scale?
Good short!🗣️🔥
Is there a complete series on sax school and does it incorporate from beginner or is this intermediate. Sounds great
Nice timing as I want to upgrade from my Elkhart 11, and was tempted to buy on e bay. There are some good rent-to-buy places in the uk and now I can ask if they have been set up, something which I had never thought of before!
Great chat and good to catch up with Jean Paul Saxophones as herd of them but never looked into it and always nice to have insight and know the person and knowledge behind the product which helps to make good choices. I will check out their website. Some useful tips here thank you
will help with guitar also, thank you much
Nice story about the musician with the lended yamaha saxophone
Dany Villarreal.
Saxophone inspired me so much
Brilliant
Hi Nigel, this is gold, all these exercises are gold!!
I hope they help you!
Hi! First of all, great content even for me who lives in japan and have super easy access to the great yamaha and yanagisawa saxophones. I wonder if you have ever played the Antigua Pro alto saxophone. If so, id like to know your thoughts
Thanks. I’m glad you enjoyed this video. I haven’t tried Antigua saxes yet but they are on my list for sure.
Great concept with the video!
Thanks for watching.
These lessons are the best I can find to improve my performance. Excellent!
Thank you so much!
As an intermediate player, an expensive horn won't help me. As always keep up the great work! Love the channel! A year ago I came back to the saxophone after a 43 year pause (when I played alto and tenor for 7 years). I decided to get a JP AS-400 to start off. Good decision. All the things reviewers say. "Dark". I like it. But I used it so much that I bought a 40 year old "Vito" Alto (OEM Yamaha 23) to learn repair (I am in Australia). ONCE I got back up to speed in capability, then the Jean Paul really started to shine. BEAUTIFUL sound with the stock mouthpiece and a 2 1/2 read. Top to bottom nice sound. I think the JP AS-400 would be great for classical, sax quartet etc. I can consistently play through the whole range in pianissimo if I want. It never limits me to what I want to do. Played the neighbor's Selmer Super Action 80 Series 1 and while the middle range might sound a bit better, at my skill level (intermediate), It wasn't magical. I don't need an expensive horn. Finally, at the price point, the JP-AS400 is beautiful. The subtle engraving is just enough. Shipping to Australia was perfect and protected well. And of course JP QCs and sets up the horn. Played perfect out of the box. Dream JP Alto would be one without the high-F sharp key (personal preference).
Awesome. Thanks for sharing and I agree, the JP saxes are excellent value.
"finding the right tutor" how do you do that? speaking from the UK
Excellent question. I think the right teacher for you should be someone you enjoy learning from who is experienced and has a good structure to how they teach. That’s hard to find but super important if you want to stay motivated and keep improving. If you are struggling to find the right person our ACCELERATOR program might be a better option for you. www.saxschool.online/accelerator
What is the soong Nigel plays at about 6:15, really beautiful. It's... something on a rainbow, on the tip of my tongue and driving me nuts...Ahh got it, I've got the world on a string.
....sitting on a rainbow
I have a Jean Paul Tenor and I love it.. i dropped it at a gig and it got damaged a bit. I still played it for a month or so. Then had a huge speaker fall on it in an open case at a different gig and my keys on the bottom got bent. I got it fixed and it plays wonderful.. I truly found an amazing instrument..
Great interview! When I was in college I borrowed an alto from a friend and taught myself to play. I had a summer job and earned enough to buy a Selmer Mark VI (for under $700 back in the 60's). I played it for a few years, but it got stolen. For the next few years I played 2 different horns: one was borrowed and the other one got stolen (again!). Then for about 15 years I didn't have a sax. I was in Ukraine shortly after the break-up of the USSR and I bought a used Amati alto for $220. People were desperate to get $ as the local currency was collapsing. I spent another $100 to get it in good playing condition and have been playing it since then. Last year I was in Miami and made an appointment to play test the Jean-Paul 860 tenor, but something came up at the last minute. I think it is great that some good affordable horns are now available.
Thanks for watching Rob.
I have had a Jean Paul SS-400SP curved soprano saxophone for 18 months. I use a Yamaha 5C mouthpiece and an Otto Link Tone Edge 6S mouthpiece with it. I never have a problem keeping it in tune and it sounds great. I also haven't had any problems hitting the low notes all the way down to low Bb or the altissimo notes. I don't think of it as a student saxophone. It's got a really fast and easy action and it's very well constructed. I have a lot of fun with it. I also love the case. The inside is form fit around the instrument. When it's in it's case, it doesn't wiggle in there. It's a whole lot easier to throw it on my back and head out to a park or something to practice than my straight soprano sax is. When I'm heading out somewhere to play, my Jean Paul is my instrument of choice.
Love this! My next tenor will be a Jean Paul!!!
i'm primarily a guitar player, and about a year ago i went to see a tash sultana concert. about halfway through the set, they pulled out a saxophone and i was utterly entranced. i always had a passing intrest in the saxophone, and had considered picking it up, but i just never got around to it. a little while ago, i remembered that i had my grandma's highschool band sax in a closet, and i've spent the last couple weeks getting it back into playing shape. we'll see how it goes, but i'm pretty excited
Yoo, can someone please help. When I play D with the octave key, often it sounds like A. I don't understand whyy. /Alto sax
A is the next overtone up from middle D and is where a D will naturally ‘split’ to if there’s an issue. This is quite possibly the result of a leak on one of your pads, so I’d suggest seeking out an instrument technician first to check it’s not a problem with your horn. If there is no problem with the sax, it will most likely either be because you’re not voicing / pitching the D with your throat correctly, or you’re biting down on the mouthpiece too hard. Hope that helps! Best wishes. Joel.
ik ben 72 jaar en heb een alt sax gekocht. probeer nu via deze video sax te spelen. Ik ben door Candy Dulver verslaafd geraakt aan deze sound, ik vind jou video geweldig . dank je wel
